Trying to do our part for the Earth.

Here at Elite Equine Essentials we are always working to be more environmentally conscious.

In February 2018 we first partnered with Sendle, who is a 100% carbon neutral courier service. In September 2019, Australia Post also became carbon neutral.

In October 2020 we moved mostly to home-compostable packaging for our parcels using HeroPacks. Soon after we moved to using industrially compostable sticky-tape, and in January 2021 were able to bring in home-compostable shipping labels

Parcels that can’t be shipped in HeroPacks (usually due to size and/or fragility) are sent in reusable/recyclable cardboard boxes and any padding used is being reused or repurposed from a previous life.

Our 5kg and 10kg buckets of Belinda’s vitamin and mineral supplements are also fantastic for reusing. Our 10kg buckets have lasted many years out in the elements, and can be repurposed as feed prep buckets, laundry buckets and more. At this stage the packaging on our 5kg and 20kg bags is only recyclable through RedCycle at participating Coles and Woolworths stores, be sure to chop them into pieces no larger than A3 paper.

We are always looking for new ways to become more sustainable, and this becomes more and more possible as plastic free technology advances and the demand for these products grow. Have ideas on how we can do better? Please let us know!

I received a product in compostable packaging - what do I do?

HeroPacks are best disposed of in home or industrial composting systems. They will still break down completely in landfill, but due to the nature of landfill it takes 8x as long and contributes to methane in the atmosphere.

1. Re-use them!

Some orders we send in reusable packaging will have a spare adhesive strip. If you’ve cut along the dotted line to open, you can re-use to send your own parcels by removing & recycling the white strip via RedCycle and sealing it again.

Other ideas for reuse, even without the adhesive strip are:

– Compost/kitchen scrap bin liners

– Compostable kitty litter/doggy poop bags

– A place to store all of your compostable items to dispose of in #2 or #3

– Compostable plant pots – start your veggies in them and plant them in the garden, knowing the bag will break down completely and be good worm food!

2. Compost them at home, at a friends, or find a local composter who can take it off your hands.

If anyone you know runs a home composting system or worm farm, simply remove anything not home-compostable (e.g. the white adhesive strip, sticky tape, any yellow “heavy” stickers) and throw them in. In home composting systems, it can take around 120 days to break down completely, but it will help if you chop it up into smaller pieces first. Find someone local with a composter here

3. Send it to an industrial composting business or place in your council green bin.

Firstly remove anything non-compostable (e.g. the white adhesive strip any yellow “heavy” stickers). If you or someone you know has a council greens bin, the mailer can be thrown straight in there. If not, you can find industrial composting businesses here. It might be worth saving up a few of these compostable items or collaborating with friends to take a trip to one.

Notes:

– The sticky tape we use is compostable, but only in industrial compost systems with high temperatures, see #3 on how to dispose of this.

– The shipping labels you receive  can be left on for both home and industrial compost systems as these are home compostable
